Investors in S&P 500 stocks on balance paid about 16 percent more for their shares than the stocks are now worth, based on trading volume and share prices, says Steve Kim, North American quantitative strategist at Credit Suisse First Boston Inc.

``As the market rises, investors holding these losing positions are likely to sell into rallies,'' muting or possibly choking off gains, Kim said. Such selling may be exacerbated by the faltering economic recovery.
