Iran kicked his butt at great cost, while we were weighing in on Saddam's side, sinking oodles of Iranian ships and shooting down an Iranian civilian airliner. Originally because the airliner was allegedly off course, out of schedule, not listening on the required radio band, and diving for a US ship, none of which actually turned out to be true in the end. I wouldn't advise we ignore Saddam, I'd advise looking beyond the propaganda barrage of the moment. Given your penchant for historical analogies, I'd bring up the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982. Sharon had a plan there that looked pretty concrete compared to the current handwaving on Iraq.
