Barron's explores the dive in shares of ESS Technology (ESST: news, chart, profile), a leading manufacturer of the chips that run DVD players. Despite rising earnings on the year, the company cut forecasts recently and shares tumbled. The article notes that DVD chip prices are falling as Taiwanese manufacturers jump into the market. For ESS, there are also production problems with new chips that allow recordable DVD machines, Barron's reports. A possible drop to book value of $4.67 is possible, the Barron's article suggests, from ESS's $11.68 close Friday.
