FYI - Internet-wide DNS outage this morning. I suspect this has something to do with the feud between Internic and Alternic, and suspect charges will wind-up being filed. Just a guess, though.

Here is the bulletin put-out by my back ISP (and also ISP where I have two web servers). FWIW, @Home (my primary ISP) had no outage that I noticed. However, I was not able to access PC Quote, and possibly other sites.

** INTERNET WIDE OUTAGE BULLETIN **

Attention CONNECTnet Customers,

This morning (7/17/97) you may have experienced problems resolving hostnames under the top level domain ".COM". During its routine update to the root name servers, the InterNIC sent out corrupt information resulting in at least 75% of the root name servers on the Internet going down for an extended period of time. This problem resulted in problems sending e-mail, browsing web pages, and the inability of many Internet users to connect to sites located here at CONNECTnet.

As soon as CONNECTnet became aware of the situation, modifications to our name server were made to give CONNECTnet users uninterrupted service despite the Internet wide outages. Despite these changes some interruptions may still occur as the root nameservers are still unstable. At the time of writing this letter outbound access should be normal for all CONNECTnet users. Other Internet users trying to access sites located at CONNECTnet will continue to have problems until their Internet Service Provider fixes their name server or until the root name servers are corrected.
