Taking of Brown, now that I’ve transferred my assets I can talk frankly about the company. I made a mistake and made an order over 5000 shares and was surcharged over $1500 in commission on one security (SYBB) – that’s right: $1500, even though because of liquidity, most if not all of the shares went through in blocks under 5000. I called and emailed many times to get them to meet me halfway as a gesture of goodwill but was met with a wall of indifference and then hostility – my many thousands of dollars in commissions and other charges paid smoothly to them over five years seemed to count for nothing. I would have accepted a certain # of free trades to settle the matter but to no avail. Disgusted by their greed as well as their error-strewn correspondence I’ve now moved my account and consolidated my portfolio at Datek. These guys still have to learn that a dollar spent on goodwill pays twice over in customer loyalty. I like the executions I’m getting with Datek and now wish I’d moved earlier. The commissions are also less as you’re charged only for the fraction of your order that’s executed.
