Alomex, The Mercedes/Ford arugument is OK for a different type of product, but does not apply well here.
<...Any car we choose needs a major repairs every three-four months, just because of the mileage...> <...I can take my Ford to any repair shop, and they know how to repair it, this is not the case with Mercedes...>
If people would take simple care of their Macs, their stability would vastly improve. 2 very simple things you should do regularly is rebuild your desktop, and use Norton Disk Doc to examine your system. Do this once every 3-4 weeks and most crash problems go away.
This is real simple stuff that the most novice of users can do in 10 minutes. As you mentioned earlier, most Wintellers can do little more than launch apps. No wonder. You need a decent (and expensive sys admin) to take care of those overly complex beasts.
<...So this is how a technically superior product can be shuned by the majority of users...>
Well, no, the Mercedes is hardly shunned. It is just too far into the luxury category to be attainable for most. This is very different from shunned. But I'll tell you what shunned is:
Shunned is when a biased press puts a negative spin on anything that comes out of Apple. Shunned is when the herd mentality takes over and Mac bashing 'experts' come out of the woodwork despite never having used one.
Shunned is when Mac (and clone) prices have come down so that the product is more attainable, but the masses are unable to purchase objectively with their own brain cells, instead blindly listening to really weak arguments; possibly under the influence of new, improved "Logic-B-Gone".
