It looks like you're right that they hired the bankruptcy guys soon after 9/11. However, they apparently failed to disclose that until this week. At least that's how I interpret the CBS MarketWatch article.

Potential class-action plaintiffs could make a good case that this was a material event that should have been reported to the SEC, but was withheld to the detriment of new purchasers of the stock. If they choose to do that, I would have no expectation of price improvement in UAL stock for the next year.

LUV is still the better investment, despite its gigantically higher market cap.
