Jay, the reason to have the central banker when the government is running a monopoly large enough to make $ill Gates' look like child's play is to make a lot of profit for the government.

His job is to maintain the value of the currency and extract profits through inflation and interest charges. He loves productivity improvements because he can print flat out and not cause inflation. All the printing goes straight to the government spending capacity and they just love spending, even more than they love wars and girls.

To maintain the value of the currency, sometimes he has to stop printing heaps and raise interest rates, to avoid inflation, abandonment of the currency, loss of confidence and economic disruption. Sometimes, he needs to keep the money moving and avoid deflation by printing heaps, cutting interest rates and avoiding economic implosion.

I doubt his compensation package is as high as the CEO of such a large privately-run business would collect [especially if stock-options were issued].

He is one amazing man!
