I am having some difficulty in seeing why you regard it as silly. As for the utility, that was the point of my earlier diatribe: the distinction is part of the logic of our way of viewing human beings as autonomous individuals, with meaningful selves. It is only silly if one collapses the notion of responsibility into the notion of causality, ignoring the whole issue of intention......
