I don't find intention that important, myself. And in saying that i don't think I collapse causality and responsibility- unless by causality you mean ultimate cause- in which case I do. If you are the ultimate cause, you are responsible. Pretty much end of story as far as I'm concerned.

Very few of us are thoughtful about our actual intent. Many people do not really think about their intentions until they are forced to, and at that point, I'd say revisionism kicks in so strongly, that their ideas on the matter are silly. And any one else's ideas on the intentions of others? Doubly damned I'm sure. I've seen enough of that kind of second guessing on SI to know that guessing about other people's intentions while entertaining, is simply guessing (and I include even my deeply treasured guesswork in that). I think about what I am going to do a great deal- and even I wouldn't dream of assuring you, I am correct in assessing even my own intentions. I do my best- but for the law? I'm not sure it is important- except to set the "reasonable person" standards for things like self defense. Other than that, I see it as less than useless, I see it as actually harmful to the system- since I believe the idea creates perversions of the system which I do not like. But, of course, that is only my opinion.
