Imagine a country of politically independent voters. Politicians would have to run and be reelected based on issues.

John, that would be great but I don't see it happening any time soon. In response to a growing unrest with the behavior of the two main parties, I had hoped a third party would develop that would shake up the status quo. However, it looks like instead people have just stopped bothering to vote.

Republican/Democrat are just marketing brands, like Coke/Pepsi. As long as they have your loyalty, they really don't have to worry about quality. And the products from both are essentially the same.

And apparently that loyalty can transcend any kind of logic or rationality. I think this country actually may be in serious trouble.
