The problem that most political hacks (many conservative) have out there is that they don't see the big picture and how the U.S. really relates to the world. Follow the money!!!

From the crushing of budding Iranian democracy in the early 1950s and the support of the brutal regime of the Shah of Iran to the crushing of century old democracy in Chile in the 1973 and the support of the brutal regime of Pinochet. The U.S. is NOT interested in fostering democracy. The U.S. is interested in forcing economic homogeny on the world through any means necessary, including the displacement of democractly elected governments with brutal dictators as noted above. So, American wealthy elites can profit from the world's resources.

The U.S. government (especially the military and CIA) are just vehicles used by powerful wealthy persons and corporations to get their way around the world. Forget about all the other analysis, it's just noise. The U.S. government acts when the rich and powerful's economic interests are at stake as they were in Iran in the early 1950s and Chile in the early 1970s. That's how the world works. All this other nonsense about patriotism and morality is just hot air. Money talks!
