There has not been a war between the Arab states and Israel in 30 years, and there have been actual treaties signed between Israel and Egypt, on the one side, and Israel and Jordan on the other. Iran is showing signs of moderating, and Iraq has so far been checked in its regional aspirations. Lebanon has become more stable, compared to the '80s. There is no special reason to think we could have installed and supported democratic regimes in the region. Indeed, those regimes that are democratic or quasi- democratic, such as Turkey and Algeria, have had to become impure in order to forestall wins by fundamentalist parties that would have thrown out the constitutional order. It is speculative whether we have made things worse or better, I suppose, but I do know that citing ongoing problems in the region proves nothing about the efficacy of earlier interventions........
