Excuse making is a very slippery slope with no end in sight

You are so right. Many crimes by their very definition ... without any further inquiry .... prove deep mental aberration. Examples would be a mother drowning her young children, or a teenager shooting up his school and killing 20 people. We don't need to waste time with deep psychological studies of these individuals ... we know by the very character of their act that they are abnormal and mentally/psychologically defective human beings.

The slippery slope is that ... once we fool around with "knowing intent" and "mental capacity" and the like as moderators of responsibility ... the very worst, the most outrageous, the most atrocious crimes ... would have to go unpunished a priori.

There is simply no way out of this box.
