" The looming war with Iraq is hardly reassuring on the military front. "

it's finally dawning on me that the Bush Administration is floating the war thing to force Saddam to let weapons inspectors back into Iraq on our terms.

If war does happen, it will be over quickly since the Iraqi people and the military there bitterly despise Saddam. What won't be over quickly would be the succession plan. But there are enough genuinely half-decent Iraqis that hopefully something could be worked out.

Saddam actually gained power by pretending to be a benevolent and socially-conscious leader who cared about furthering the welfare of ordinary Iraqis. That he gained power on that premise tells us something about other Iraqis.
