I believe the company first has be turning a real profit prior to insiders being able to sell.

There's already enough of a damper on venture investing without your cutting off potential liquidity for early investors. Full and fair disclosure is what's required, and that's as it should be. Just enforce the laws we have, thanks.

More had to lose than win. The result is otherwise impossible.

What result? If AMZN is still several points (more than ten, I think) ahead of its IPO price, wouldn't public investors, on average, have to also be ahead?

PS: I think all those AMZN investors should run for the exits while they still have a profit. ;-)
