What I mean is that I could put the DJX, call the XAU, take call hedges on the DJX and put hedges on the XAU and make a bundle in the down last week... which I did.

WOW - If you made a bundle CONGRATS! cause that is all that matters.

Generally when one hedges one is long with puts, or short with calls, or short a weak stock ina sector and long a stronger stock in the same sector.

I stand by what I said, XAU and DJX can not be easily combined into any meaningful hedge. That is my take. (now if you meant you hedged XAU in isolation, and DJX in isolation, then that is completely different, but XUA to DJX makes no sense to me still). Let's see what Velo has to say, since you asked him not me, and if I am wrong then apologies but I am sticking to my guns regardless.
