I am tiring of this left/right debate :-)

Actually, we weren't doing that; just speculating on the political outcomes.

If I were Bush - I would launch an attack - and simultaneously do a JFK style address to the nation to show the evidence (having briefed Congressional leaders earlier in the day). Just like the Cuban Missile Crisis.

You are, I should have included this point, assuming they have a smoking gun. Well, their defense of the smoking gun has to be credible. That's hard right now.

As for comparisons with JFK and the Cuban Missile Crisis, that's an interesting one. My first thought is the two are not comparable because we were under immediate threat, an extremely credible one, since even the left wing of the Democratic party (Stevenson as the UN ambassador) agreed. To argue that Saddam could be linked to 9-11 is to argue about the past. If it were done in such a way as to demonstrate he will do it again, and the arguments were clearly not made in an electoral context, that would be powerful.

As for my own opinions, I think your scenario is extremely unlikely. I think it's going to be much more Bush moral clarity and we know the truth kind of stuff. If that's the case, I won't be out on the picket lines; getting too old for that kind of stuff; but I won't be arguing with my friends to support Bush; and you'll hear from me on SI.;-) (Note the ironical left eyebrow lift).
