My older son came up with a very good example of the greatest good for the greatest number -- gang rape. The rapists clearly are receiving the greatest good for the greatest number. The suffering of the rape victim is not only irrelevant but preferable if you espouse this theory. That is a problem with all utilitarian calculations. The failure to respect the end in itself. "The greatest good for the greatest number" always screws some minority. Derek
