OT: BEWARE FEDEX GROUND!!

I recently decided to try the services of a wine vendor that I have known about for several years. It is somewhat amazing to see that they can ship wine in nearly every state, in spite of this nation's byzantine alcohol beverage control laws (as with many things here and in other nations, we are beginning to see the strains on local laws and institutions as information and people move farther and faster every day).

I found out how they are able to do business in every state. They have a contract with a local distributor. The distributor secures the product that the vendor wants to ship, and the vendor contacts a delivery company to pickup and deliver the package.

The order was placed on 7/24. Fedex Ground picked up the package on 7/31 (took the distributor almost a week to get the product in stock). Turns out, the pickup location was only about 5 miles from my door!! Fedex Ground initially said that they were expecting to deliver on 7/1. Last night, they revised the estimated delivery date to 8/7.

The message seems clear to me, use the vendor's recommendations, but buy the wines locally, even if it means asking a store to make a special order (in turn you agree to by 6 or 12 bottles). The other message seems to be that Fedex Ground is not yet as reliable a service as UPS or USPS. I'll be selecting some other shipment method when offered a choice on future inet orders.
