(Adds New York Times to first sentence)

San Francisco, Aug. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Lucent Technologies Inc. researchers today will give information about computer security software that could become a free substitute to systems being developed by Microsoft Corp. and Sun Microsystems Inc., the New York Times reported.

The software is designed to protect information and increase security when users connect to Web sites and computers at other locations, the paper said. Researchers from Lucent's Bell Labs unit will describe the programs, Factotum and Secure Store, in a paper at the Usenix computer security conference in San Francisco, the paper said.

The new technology doesn't require a central structure, unlike many current systems that keep personal data private, the paper said. The researchers presenting the paper designed the new programs to be convertible to Windows, Macintosh and Unix systems, the paper said.

The researchers said the programs store information such as user names, passwords and other data used to identify computer users to Internet merchants, the paper said.
