Well, that scientific study is over 20 years old; however, it may prove my point. Apparently, what was considered liberal over 20 years ago is now mainstream. So those same journalists would no longer be considered liberal but rather mainstream.

_______________

The poll doesn't reflect the thought that the press is aligned with the mainstream. The support for legalized abortion is a majority but is no where close to 90%. A lot less then 80% in fact probably only a decent sized minority support affirmative action. The Democrats have not had 81% of the vote in any major national election. The majority of Americans do not blame the US for third world poverty.

Tim, at the time the poll was taken those issues apparently were considered liberal. My contention is most, if not all of them, would be considered mainstream now. For an example we both agree that a majority believe in abortion.

You say a decent sized minority supports affirmative action. I would have to disagree. 52% of the US population is made up of women.......what proportion do you think is opposed to A.A.? I'm guessing but I would suspect that 30-35% of the population is made up of people of color......how many of them do you think oppose A.A.? Do you think all white men are opposed to A.A.? Well, that can't be right.....at least 10-15% of them are gay? How many gays do you think are opposed to A.A.? And I have to believe at least 10-20% of white males must support AA because they have wives working. I haven't been counting but do you still think there is not a majority who support AA? Given the breakdown in population, I would have to think there is.

I think the issue of who they voted for is an odd one and is hard to measure. However, where there's agreement is in the proportion of registered voters who are Dem. vs Rep. I believe the majority of registered voters are Dems.

The one question in which there is clear divergence is re third world poverty.......recently I saw a poll and the number surprised me......it wasn't a majority but it was closer than I expected....the low 40's I think. And the poll said more and more Americans see a link between third world poverty and our way of life.

While the views of the journalists do diverge to some degree from the population in general, its not by a whole bunch. That might explain why there are a lot more news programs like MSNBC or NBC or CNN than Fox.......and that this stuff may be more mainstream than you think.
