I know, Hawkmoon, that Saddam is monstrous, a Stalinlike murderous thug. I believe he's mean and evil.
Uh huh... yes... Go on...
One would hope that our experience with Stalin (and the rest of the soviet leadership) taught us something.
Like how we were forced to spend TRILLIONS of dollars, and lose 10's of thousands of lives as he launched invasions of S. Korea, created mischief in Greece, and forced us to face his successor's down in Berlin and Cuba.
How millions of people suffered under Stalin's direct, or indirect rulership, how his successors sponsored terrorism throughout the world and created misery for hundreds of millions of people over decades.
Yeah... you (and many others) admit that he's a monster and that's all well and good. But what if we had it all over to do again with Stalin?? If we had known how much it would cost to fight the cold war, would we have just opted to destroy the Soviet system as soon as we finished with the Nazis??
Again, people don't understand the demographic and cultural paradigm which is appearing in the muslim world. 400 million muslim youths passing into adulthood over the next 10-15 years looking to raise some kids, cash, or pure hell (maybe a combination of all three)...
Marriage and economic opportunity is the way to prevent terrorism from getting out of hand. But with little evidence that such a thing will be made available under present regimes, the world had better prepare itself for some major unrest. It's as inevitable as the sun coming up tomorrow morning.
As is the likelihood that Saddam, and eventually his sons, will use such an opportunity to encourage attacks against the US by extremist groups. This is a family dynasty we're talking about here. When he dies, his kids will carry on the "family business".
As for Vin Diesel, I recall him in Saving Private Ryan, and only vaguely in Boiler Room. I wish him well, and might bring myself to actually watch the movie despite the rather unbelievable plot.
