As tech executives focus on books, business languishes

Bob Bishop, chief executive of high-end computer maker Silicon Graphics Inc.(NYSE:SGI - News; SGI), plans to certify results for the SEC after a thorough check of financial procedures. But he plans to go beyond the sworn statement.

"There is a tremendous amount of additional attention paid by boards of directors, including our board, on all the issues that go into corporate governance," he said. "It is not just: 'Let's look at all the numbers.'"

U.S. companies should focus on moving toward long-term investment goals rather than "looking at the goddamn stock price on an hourly basis," Bishop says. Indeed, a short-term focus on SGI's stock price would make most people crazy. In the last year, the stock first rose 14-fold, then fell by two-thirds to trade around $1.30 now...
