"I think the EPIC architecture (Intel’s Itanium) is the most expensive disaster in high technology," Khan said. He added that Intel would best be served by expanding its current 32-bit processors with 64-bit extensions in a project that was rumored to be called Yamhill by Intel insiders. Further rumors also indicated that Intel has cancelled the Yamhill program. Intel has said repeatedly that it would not comment on unannounced product lines.

"We’ve been asked to pack up and go home since 1994 when Intel announced EPIC," Khan said. "In fact, it hasn’t amounted to much. My prediction is SPARC will outlive EPIC
