I have seen few accounts of what I would call 'hate'
You don't have to wander too far from the mainstream to stumble across a lot of hatred directed towards Muslims. Try www.freerepublic.com, which is a site that I like pretty well, but it's very hardball and far to the right.
"Raghead," "towelhead," "camel jockey" is mild for that place. The ones that get me are the oft-repeated statements that Muslims are devil worshipers and Islam is evil. Lots of unrelenting rage directed at just about every facet of Muslim life, and every Muslim country. Much violent language.
There may be people on FADG who think this but they don't say it here.
When talk radio started showing how many people in this country are full of hatred and rage, it was kind of a revelation to me. I don't live my life that way, don't understand people who do. But I have some topics that if you got me going, I'd express quite a bit of rage, myself. (I hate people who use weedkiller on their lawns to make them look pretty. Bad for the environment.)
Hatred of Muslims in this country predates 9/11. I used to share office space with a lawyer who represented a lot of taxi cab drivers, almost all of whom were from the Middle East. His secretary, the most liberal woman on earth, used to swear under her breath when they came to the office, and swear out loud when they left. "F*ing ragheads" was her usual oath. She thought they were all liars and smelled bad.
Maybe it's people in the upper classes and upper-middle classes, or people with desk jobs, where people act polite, who don't realize how much hatred there was in this country directed towards Middle Easterners before 9/11, and especially after 9/11.
But you are absolutely right that it's not in the mainstream media. |
