The important ancient precedent that was broken was the one where the defeated candidate concedes defeat and pledges his support for the new president.

In this case, the loosing candidate chose to chase power, recklessly, driving the country to the brink of a Constitutional crisis.

This selfish disregard for the country is unprecedented.
