I am not very fond of Wagner. I admit, some of it is aversion to his proto- Naziism, so I may not have given it all enough of a chance. As it happens, my wife wrote her senior essay on "Tristan and Isolde", at St. John's, but what she said made sense, so my disaffection from the opera didn't hurt. (I dislike erotic mysticism, and find too much of the score overwrought). I didn't see the production you mention, but I saw a rather good production of "Der Meistersinger" in the '80s......
