SUN SOLARIS CONTINUES TO OUT PERFORM WINDOWS NT Lotus Domino Web Server Independent Direct-Comparison Test Results In Nearly 100% HTTP Request Hit Rate For Solaris Compared to NT's 20% ------------------------------------------------------------------------ MENLO PARK, CA - July 16, 1997 - In a direct comparison with identical Web server system configurations, Sun Microsystems' Solaris operating environment (Intel Platform Edition) proved more reliable and scalable and had a higher overall performance than Microsoft's NT operating system, according to Technovations, the company that conducted the independent WebStone benchmarking test. Under high loads of up to 900 simulated Web clients, Sun Solaris operating environment achieved a near 100 percent success rate servicing HTTP requests with a Lotus Domino 4.51 Server compared to NT's 20 percent success rate on the same system. Sun Solaris 2.5.1 operating environment also outperformed Microsoft NT 4.0 in scaling by a factor of two-to-one. The test showed that upon adding a second central processing unit(CPU), the performance scaling improvement of Sun Solaris operating environment averaged 60 percent while Microsoft NT averaged only 30 percent. Additionally, SunTM Solaris operating environment proved to be up to 65 percent faster on data throughput than NT. "These WebStone test results indicate that Lotus Domino running on Sun Solaris is a far better choice for businesses that need a reliable, accessible and scalable Web server up and running 24 hours a day, seven days a week," said Steve MacKay, vice president and general manager, Solaris Products Group. "The combination of Domino on the Solaris operating environment results in unsurpassed performance and, most importantly, the uninterrupted webtone service that enables companies to maintain a competitive edge in the global market." As both intranet and Internet usage increases, companies such as web service providers, who plan to capitalize on information demands will need an environment that handles heavy traffic, even if the volume can not always be anticipated. Companies deploying Domino on the Solaris operating environment have the capability to handle the unanticipated volume increases and network hits that are demanded of today's internal and external web service providers. This benchmark reinforces results of a January 1997 record-setting Lotus Domino performance test. This earlier test used the Lotus NotesBench tool and compared Sun Solaris 2.5.1 against Microsoft NT 3.51 and IBM OS/2. It resulted in the best overall performance up to that time, including the highest Mail and MailDB capacity, response time and throughput, and the best Idle User result with the maximum number of users connected to a Domino server. WebStone Benchmark Tests The WebStone benchmark is a commonly used test suite that measures the performance of Web server software and hardware. The WebStone 2.01 results obtained by Technovations provided direct comparisons for the two operating systems in several areas, including: * Server Availability: Connections per second/errors per second * Scalability: Effect on performance in adding second CPU * Data Throughput: Mbits per second * Connection Rates: Connections per second The tests were conducted in order to compare and understand the performance characteristics of the Lotus Domino 4.51 Server on the two leading operating systems. Benchmark tests were run by Technovations on a 200 MHZ Proliant 5000 System (Compaq Computer Corporation). Technovations International Inc., an independent company specializing in performance and benchmarking technologies, conducted the WebStone 2.01 test.
