"The liberal position has always been that it is better to let a killer back on the street to kill again"..."victims be damned"

I wasn't aware that liberals were motivated by that desire. Are you quite sure you are fairly summerizing the liberal position?

The classical liberal believes in a limited government, the natural rights of man, and self rule. Liberalism is characterized by an attitude of open-mindedness and progressive thinking.

Modern conservatism has much in common with classical liberalism--although it is somewhat hidebound and inflexible, and paralyzed by the status quo pertinent to the days of Constantine.

Whether the State is controlled by Liberals or Conservatives, it remains an entity which must leech its power from society. And it supports a bureacracy which is representative of the power, the control, and the responsibility which has been stolen from the people. Some of that power is used to the benefit of the people, but much of it preserves and expands the interests of the State. The foolish conceit of the People is that the State shares their interests; but in truth, the State serves only the State.

Your idea that liberals are uncaring is rather bold. I have never heard it expressed before.
