They, like everyone else, saw the massive Gore fraud, and had to choose to ignore it or defend the republic by stepping on and squashing it.

Even if this was the case, we are still a nation of laws and the SC has to justify its actions under law or it is not a court. It could have stopped any Gore fraud, put forth equality requirement, and then made sure they were followed. They did not do this. Like I said before, either all legal votes must be counted equally or they don't. If they don't, they had no business stopping the count. If they do, they were right to stop the count and were constitutionally required to ensure all legal votes were counted by the 14th amendment. The safe harbor dealine (a statutory, not consitutional, deadline) cannot not overrule a constitutional violation.
