Wait a minute- I happen to know something about the Marranos. After the fall of Granada (1492) the Jews of Spain were forced to convert, be killed, or leave with the moors. Many chose to leave to Muslim territories whish were hospitable to Jews at that time. But many who stayed REALLY converted. Of course that didn't stop the nationalistic religious zealots from suspecting them of not really converting. So over time there were many episodes where people (even whole villages) were murdered for "allegedly" secretly practicing Judaism. The irony is that many Christians who were never Jewish got killed in these episodes because of confusion over family names and history. Sad times, Sad people. Zealots really are the scum of the Earth, no matter what stripe their zealotry takes (imo of course). I except zealots against zealotry, for obvious reasons :-)
