Don't forget that the school choice movement emerged from the desire for state payment for the costs of the Christian academies that were created for those who didn't want to mix with blacks.
I'll join Jewel in asking for substantiation of that.

And lots of things originally conceived for bad reasons have proven to be good in changed circumstances. Any school trying to get away with that these days is going to have a problem. Particularly one getting public money. The laws have changed.

I support vouchers because the public school system appears beyond hope. Efforts to reform the system get perverted and destroyed by an entrenched bureaucracy and entrenched unions. It's time to fire the lot of them and start over. Can you really argue otherwise? How many educational fads can you remember that were supposed to "fix" things? Remember New Math? Phonics? And the Idiocy before phonics that thought kids just learning to read should be able to do what experienced readers can do - recognize words by their "shape"?
