Talk about what will drive chips.

CNBC just said “the FCC would require all TV manufactures to start producing Digital Broadcasting Receivers as the primary receiver by 2004. Then all new TV (13 inch on larger) will have to have both up and until 2007. By 2007 all US TV broadcasting will be digital only. Then the government will sell the older non-digital broadcast frequencies to individual buyers.

This means that by 2007, every TV (recieving the open wave braodcasting, non-cable)in the US will be receiving digital broadcasting “only”.

Now, not every household in the US has a computer or more than one. I have about seven computers including the children’s PC and games, but we also have six TVs. These TVs are from 2 to 7 years old. I was not planning to replace any one of my TVs, let alone my Sony 52” projection, at least not for many years. Now all my TVs will stop working in four to five years.

Not everyone needs to upgrade his or her computers. Now the government will require everyone who wants to watch broadcast TV, will need to buy a new TV within the next three or for years.

What I’m suggesting is that the 2000 PC Computer Bug that drove the PC demand in 1999-99 will pale in comparison to the TV demand required in a two – three year period.

Just a thought.

That’s gotta be a lot of chips needed, and soon.
