TOKYO, Aug 09, 2002 (Kyodo via COMTEX) -- McDonald's Holdings Co. (Japan) Ltd.
on Friday reported unprecedentedly sharp falls in both sales and profit in the
first half of its current business year as it was hit hard by last September's
outbreak of mad cow disease in Japan.

McDonald's said it registered an unconsolidated pretax profit of 2.46 billion
yen in the January-June period, down 80.5% from the corresponding period a year
earlier, on a 13.9% fall in parent-only sales to 158.33 billion yen.

The number of visitors to McDonald's fast-food chain during the six-month period
decreased 12.5% to 321.16 million.

Unconsolidated net profit dropped 81.4% to 1.41 billion yen or 10.63 yen per
share, the Tokyo-based company said.
