"Simple, it was Hitler. It was one of his many bizarre military decisions. Such as: not taking Moscow in the summer of 1941 . . ."

Hearing that it was Hitler's "bizarre military decision" not to take Moscow in the summer of 1941 would certainly be a surprise to many of our friends in Russia. As a former long term resident of Russia, I think it is closer to the truth to say that the defeat of the German forces outside of Moscow in winter 1941-42 made it clear that Germany was finished in fact. Two fronts notwithstanding, Russia broke Germany's back on the Eastern Front. Why is that so hard for Americans to grasp, especially now that we have gone from a cold war to a special relationship?
