I have been drooling for the new Honda mid sized SUV--the Pilot. However, dealer mark-up will be one of the things that keeps me out of one, in fact, I found one stickered for $38,000 yesterday!
I get a kick out of the dealer second stickers-- Screw You! stickers <g>.
I'm in Washington State--one of the more regressive states with an 8.6% sales tax. So...just the money I'll save on taxes by not buying a Pilot buys a lot of other stuff: New struts and shocks for my old Ford wagon ($500) I'll de gunk the engine and put on new spark plug wires ($30). I think I might get the rear windows tinted ($500?). Have to get somebody to sotter my rear defroster (damn if I can get the sotter to stick) ($50$) Oh, and an alignment, and the wheels balanced ($200). Plus a nice Thule cargo box for the roof ($300). Oh, new wiper motors, they seem to be burning out...rains a lot here. A lot.
Lesse, that will less than $two grand, sweet! The paint will still look good for a few years, I use that Polish 2001 in the green bottle, keeps the paint young, amazing stuff.
With any luck the engine and tranny will last another $50k miles. Hey, it could happen!
I think that the Pilot is the best SUV on the market right now. But it ain't worth $38,000! Maybe $28k.
A little frugalitas for the bear market;-) Hmmm, great idea for a thread. |
