Why, exactly, the NYT is obligated to uphold some peculiar standard of "balance" determined by the right is something I don't get

How about a standard of balance determined by the current political realities and balance of power in Washington, DC? It's not as if the "pro" arguments were being made by a fringe group that could rightly be ignored. Sometimes the Times coverage leads me to believe that Jeb Bartlett must be President now.
