Steve, you must understand that in deep space, the temperatures are naturally cryogenic, thus traditional Superconductors or the so called Hi-TC material need no cryogenic systems (and thus the advantages of SC reduce the weight, but on earth, the cryogenic plant associated with such a system will make it non commercial). That is not a commercial endeavor by any means. There are really only five outfits that are playable, two of them I know not how to play, one is in your corner of the woods (I think it is called Oxford Magnetics, they make low temperature superconducting magnets mostly for MRI machines), and International Magnetics Corp (in PA, they must have been acquired since I cannot find their symbol anymore, maybe GE swallowed them into their medical division). Then there are three HI-TC companies, none of which I am recommending right now as investments, CDTS and SCON are in the SC filters for wireless communications, and both are in deep troubles right now (if you remember, we used to play these late in 99 and early 2000 for some very nice profits), and AMSC, attempting to make HI-TC wires, not too successfully (they have gone through about $300 MM of other people money in the last 14 years or so and have nothing to show for it).
The only other opportunity I am aware of is a private company involved with ambient superconductors, but only "accredited" investors are allowed to invest in that company (I am on their BOD) since they are not a public company at this time. If you are really interested, you'll have to PM me, since the SEC prohibits public discussions of such opportunities.
I am sorry I don't have much better news
