KT - The SF has indeed been catching a bid since about June '02, after falling since 1995 in direction proportion to the USD rise.

Switzerland, the proverbial stable and non-combatant economy -- definitely a candidate for refuge of choice, but I'm not sure how many clownbucks could pile in there at the same time.

Same problem with gold. Large capital flows there would be like trying to stuff 10 quarts of leftover mashed potatoes into a 2 quart Tupperware dish.

Too bad we lost the DM to reunification and the EZ. Then again, some people would say that the Euro IS the DM, and they're probably right.

Don't like the Yen. I figure if things are such that the USD contracts leprosy, the Yen won't look much better under the same economic conditions BWTFDIK

Last but certainly not least - your notion about the Yuan I will grant, although there's some question as to whether the hot money of the world is ready to make that leap of faith yet.

I expect a lot of people will remain in denial during China's ascendence to its place as a leading global economic power (Commies and all that stuff, you know). Quite frankly, I still have a bit of trouble accepting the inevitability myself, even though as a boy I always thought things would turn out that way within my lifetime.

An article was posted either here or somewhere else recently that hypothesized a day would eventually come when China as a net exporter would be in a position to ask that Chinese goods be settled in Yuan instead of USD. The writer believed that the day in question may not be as far off in the future as most people might think.

Forcing the world's trading nations to buy Yuan against settlement would be taking a page right out of the USD playbook. And with the size of the population base in the region to provide the foundation upon which to float enough paper, and do it at a good clip, you're right -- the Yuan could eventually become King of the Hill.

Think I'll pour over some Chinese stock picks on the weekend, thanks for re-juicing my creativity
