SECURITY has been suddenly tightened at Britain's biggest arms dump, prompting fears that an attack on Iraq may be imminent.

Public access to the Central Ammunition Depot at Kineton, near Warwick, was abruptly halted two weeks ago. It is a massive Army store for thousands of shells, missiles and bullets.

And it emerged yesterday that Britain's largest aircraft carrier, HMS Ark Royal, will go to the Mediterranean in five weeks.

Officially, it is heading for joint exercises with the US Navy's 5th Fleet. But, with two squadrons of Harrier bombers, it will be in a prime position to launch air strikes on Iraq.

The Kineton clampdown emerged after a trainspotters' tour near the base was cancelled at the last minute. Army officials said it was because of a "heightened state of security". The MoD insisted the timing was just a coincidence.
