Let me follow the consequences of your logic. If the Russians didn't have a nuclear shield between 1945 and 1949, then why didn't the US free those countries right after the war? We did have a nuclear shield, after all

Because we're a democracy, Carl, and we don't like fighting wars. The Army was begging Truman, just begging him, to fight Stalin right after WWII. We had the army, the supplies, nuclear weapons, everything. But the people wanted their boys to come home, and Truman sent them home.
