Barron's tech buys and sells

BUYS

MSFT Owns PC franchise, lots of cash, should take enterprise software share.

IBM Good moves to boost services, cut hardware. PwC was smart deal.

CSCO Last man standing in telecom gear. Leveraging strong balance sheet.

DELL Dominates PCs - still taking share. Moving into servers, printers.

ORCL Still dominant in databases; seeing rebound after long slide in apps.

HPQ What a mess. Cheap on the numbers. But beware Dell in printers.

TSM One of our favorites. Best player in an increasingly important business.

FDC What bubble? Steady grower. Once a place to hide; now a good hedge.

SAP Patience needed, but ERP giant will survive and thrive in rebound.

STM Under-followed Swiss chipmaker. More consumer than PC exposure.

EDS Concerns on Worldcom exposure, accounting, made stock a bargain.

SELLS

INTC PC growth will disappoint; limited success in communications chips.

NOK Wireless market still weakening. Need a color phone? Didn't think so.

TXN Turnaround emerging. But pricey. And wireless exposure is worrisome.

MOT Serial turnaround story. Gaining cellular share. But we're not convinced.

AMAT The premier chip equipment maker. Fine company. But still too pricey.

QCOM No handsets; CDMA chips, royalties. If you must own cellular, pick this.

EMC Adds software arm to regain dominance in storage. But still high-priced.

SUNW The dot in dot-bomb. Server price war eroding margin. Must cut costs.

MU DRAM king too tied to weak PC market, spot pricing. A trading stock.
