Yes, real estate started looking better early last year. I know of some former stock market unrequited lovers who opted out of the market in months past leaving it for actual physical purchases of real estate - one classic remark was he was buying the ground "because they can't take that away from me."

I think the real estate market will continue to perform well with super low interest rates. One well positioned lady in our county service decided that paying off her house early was a better investment than her pension plans.
Since her 15 yr. mortgage runs a rate of 6%, I encouraged her to do just that since houses around here are appreciating in value 8 to 10% per year.

Somewhere, sometime this real estate thing is going to top out. It will happen when rates start to climb up, if the stock market ever shows signs of renewed energy and promise again, or we go into double dip recession. People got to live somewhere, and they don't have to invest in stocks that keep going down. Houses new and used are selling easily in growth areas.

No load FRESX is not a bad way to play the real estate business IMO. Julius Wong regards this one as a sector fund. The only prerequisite is that you have to hold it for at least 6 months without exchange penalty - no biggee. There are more on the trigger investment styles like individual REITS purchased on the exchange, but that requires more care and risk.
