Mish, in reading the following discussions with sirrealist, the way to ask this questions is to pass the dilemna to each of the farmers and have them view it from your shoes and ask them to provide a logical solution. Only the brightest guy will have the solution and he would be the one that tells the truth and able to show you the way. <G>

I assume you are in the fork asking one question simultaneously to all 3 farmers.

I can eliminate Smith by asking, "Who is not Adams".

Adams (truth)has no answer as he cannot lie for he is Adams.

Brooks (liar)has no answer as an answer of "he is not Adams" would be the truth and he cannot lie.

Smith is the only one who can answer with "he is not Adams" and is then telling the truth.

For Question 2, this is tougher.

I would ask, "Would Brooks tell me to go down this path (point to it or say to my right, etc) to my destination?

Case 1: It is the correct path

Adams (truth): NO
Brooks (liar): NO

Case 2: (Incorrect Path)

Adams: Yes
Brooks: Yes (to the wrong path)

Thus you know the correct path.

Bruce
