Not exactly the case Nadine. Patton was definitely the most vocal advocate of pushing Stalin back out of Europe, but Eisenhower was far too political to back such a plan. But many in the military, knowing they would eventually be required to confront Stalin militarily in the future, wanted to be done with it while we had the resources on hand.

Obviously the political difficulties were tremendous since Stalin had been our "ally" throughout the war and we just could "re-wire" our domestic propaganda to convince the American people that Stalin had really been our enemy all along.

But by 1947, with the Berlin airlift, we likely could have generated sufficient domestic political will to remobilize and confront Stalin and force him out of Germany and back into Poland. After all, hadn't we just expended a tremendous amount of blood and treasure eliminating one totalitarian threat from the continent?? Did we do that merely to have Hitler replaced with a more gruesome tyrant?

Lot's of what if scenarios. And that's what I fear we'll be doing 5-10 years from now when we're asking ourselves why we didn't confront Saddam Hussein now, rather than permitting him to expand his power and influence in the region.
