Herrera was considered a shoo-in for Nevada's new House seat a few months ago. The Nevada Republicans here sold out on federal redistricting to buy advantages in local redistricting.

Today, however, it's the same old Dem story. It seems Herrara is towing enough ethical baggage to sink himself before he gets started. Sound familiar? It's the party of Clinton, after all. The Dems wanted to ride the Yucca Mtn outrage here for yet one more season. But Yucca's in, and no one really cares. The latest hot issues have been slapping down the tort lawyers on medical malpractice (a special legislative session that embarrassed a few Dems who are owned by the "planintiff's" bar), and the second and final vote on the constitutional banning of homosexual marriage, which will pump conservative turnout. Guinn has no opponent for governor, and may have coattails which could hurt Herrara.

So now it's even money, as they say here, between him and Jon Porter. The national visibility Gephardt gave him in today's radio address is to keep him "respsctable" through their little fling here in Vegas. They may still get Herrara in, but it will cost them more money than they can budget, in light of the many races they have at risk...
