I think you mean the neutron bomb. Tactical nukes are just small ones meant for battlefield use.

And I think you have your terms confused. A "neutron bomb", or Enhanced Radiation Weapon, is effectively a tactical nuke that was designed to reduce the fissionable material that would wind up as "fallout", while enhancing the emission of neutron, which possess high penetrative qualities which would render tank armor ineffective as a shield,resulting in radiation sickness for its crew members.

Neutron warheads are relatively small in yield, as little as 1 kiloton, thus reducing the amount of physical damage they inflict. But the Neutrons they emit are comparable to higher yield devices.

The problem is two fold. Our European allies weren't fond of the idea that the device now made the likelihood of "going nuke" made it use more likely in any attack by the Soviets, and secondly, trying to stop an ongoing attack with one would have application since radiation sickness would take days to occur, rendering little effect in stopping the actual attack.

It's likely that we still have several hundred in our inventory, but that's classified.. :0)
