Where did the money go? Where is all that money on the famed 'sidelines'? I got curious and tried to find historic data on MMF total holdings separated by 'retail' and 'institutional'. federalreserve.gov

Then I charted MMF vs SP500 home.attbi.com

The result surprised me. Institutional MMF holdings increased exponentially after the Spring 2000 peak, but started flattening about a year ago.

Retail MMF activity was on a steady uptrend since '95 and the stock market peak did not disturb that trend, until about a year ago it actually started declining.

So, stock MF's are not the only decliners. Whenever I see a press notice about the stock MF inflow/outflow it covers only a few weeks.

Next I'll try to find historic data on stock MFs.
