NEC Joins Intel's Arcade Initiative

July 16, 1997

While Intel has to this point only been using 3Dfx
Obsidian-class processors in its open arcade demos,
NEC's PowerVR will soon be joining the party.

Intel's Open Arcade Architecture Forum (OAA Forum) now has
a new member in the form of NEC. The OAA Forum is intended
to promote the development of compatible, high end hardware
and software based upon a reference platform for arcade
machines proposed by Intel at CGDC earlier this year. As one
would expect, the underlying technologies for the specification
come from Intel (specifically Pentium 2 and AGP) but NEC's
involvement is expected to be as one of many 3D technology
manufacturers whose hardware will be used in potential machines.

"This cooperative effort will bring to the consumer a heightened
gaming and entertainment experience, complete with superior
graphics and unrivaled end-user interaction," said Shigeki Matsue,
president and CEO for NEC Electronics.

The Intel specification itself doesn't prescribe any specific 3D
technologies but merely sets forth minimum requirements (in terms
of fill rate and triangle generation). NEC's PowerVR technology is
expected to used in arcade machines as early as Q4 `97. Sources
have indicated that new PowerVR hardware (Highlander) will be
used in arcade tests as early as this Christmas while projects using
existing technology (scaled up PCX-based units) are already being
explored.
